Is it too much to ask for a website that's just... not broken?

It shouldn’t be too much to expect a functioning website. It really shouldn’t be. 


Yet there are people out there passing themselves off as SEO or web experts and building out websites for service providers that are LITTERED with broken links and inaccurate information! (True story… I am so glad the service provider trusted me to redesign and fix his website after so many bad experiences with other marketers.)


But what really gets me riled up is when I’m browsing a website that is literally for a website consulting agency, and it is broken. WE ARE THE EXPERTS, friends. Let’s set a better example for ourselves and for the people we are trying to serve. 


I know it gets annoying to my colleagues but what I expect of myself and those who work for me is to always follow a post-launch checklist - 


  1. Check the webpage looks good on desktop, tablet and mobile
  2. Check the social meta and page title
  3. Test any contact, signup or donation forms on the live site and ensure all the information is passing through as it should


It’s the marriage of big picture vision and attention to all the details–both matter.

A quick Google search “how to be your own general contractor” shows up 166 million results in just milliseconds. But there’s a lot of stuff left for you to figure out. You may be on your own facing blueprints, load bearing walls, permits and tenant improvement allowance . How do you estimate a project budget for finishing out a shell space and moving in your small business when it’s your first time doing anything like that? You can start to see how it just makes sense to work with someone who knows what they’re doing, in all aspects of your project. If you’re getting started building your company’s online presence, you can go to a site like Fiver or Upwork and hire someone to design a logo. You can find someone else to write content for a website, someone else to design a website for you. But how do you figure out what pages you need on a website? How much do you have to teach yourself about content strategy and making your brand stand out? What sets you apart from all your competition? Do you have to become an expert on search engine optimization? How do you figure out domain hosting and which DNS records to edit? Where do you learn what gets you to page 1 of Google search? Which YouTube expert do you trust as you try to teach yourself? I’m not saying it’s not possible. But I am saying, there is an easier way to do it! You don’t have to make yourself learn all of that if you don’t want to. A quicker path to a successful online brand is often working with experts. People who have spent years perfecting their craft and who know the ins and outs of websites, social media, branding, search, and all the rest.
